Throne speech sparks schools board's interest

School district trustees will be keeping a close eye on the provincial budget after a new approach to public schools was suggested in last week's throne speech.

School district trustees will be keeping a close eye on the provincial budget after a new approach to public schools was suggested in last week's throne speech.

Reference was made to developing greater choice and diversity, "centered on students' special interests and talents" as well as on greater parental involvement.

Education Minister Margaret McDiarmid promised more details will be released when the budget is tabled March 2.

Prince George school board vice chair Lois Boone hopes any new initiatives are fully financed by Victoria.

"The only concern we have as a board is if they put more initiatives on us without putting in the funding, which they've done in the past," she said.
