The provincial government and Northern Health have come up with a short list of three contractors for the construction of the new Lakes District Hospital in Burns Lake.

Bird DB Construction Inc. of Toronto, PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc. of Richmond and Stuart Olson Dominion and MCM of Calgary made the cut after the province received 11 proposal applications.

The final selection of a contractor is expected in the spring.

The budget for the 16-bed hospital is between $50 million and $55 million and it's expected to be completed by the summer of 2015. Funding for the facility will be split between the provincial government and the Stuart Nechako Regional Hospital District.

"It is terrific to see such a high level of interest in this project," Northern Health president and CEO Cathy Ulrich said in a news release. "The Lakes District Hospital and Health Centre replacement project is important in ensuring that the delivery of high-quality health-care services is available to the residents of Burns Lake."

The existing hospital was built in 1960 and government officials determined it would be more cost-effective to replace it rather than refurbish the facility.
