Three-day health conference in February

Northern Health, in partnership with Carrier Sekani Family Services, will hold a three-day health and wellness conference in Prince George that offers a number of sessions focusing on men's health issues.

The conference will be held Feb. 14 to 16 at the Prince George Civic Centre and Coast Inn of the North.

Conference topics for "One Body. One Mind. One Spirit. Pathways to Wellness" will include addictions, trauma, grief, disease management, HIV/AIDS, family violence, both men's and women's health issues and the role of the traditional family.

Keynote speaker for the men's health conference will be health educator, Bernard Denner who is renowned for his Man Model of Health Promotion that has attracted thousands of men to learn about their health.

Denner's work has taken him to the Australian outback as well as Canada, U.S. and Europe with programs that engage indigenous and non-indigenous men towards better outcomes for health and happiness. He'll take the spotlight at noon on Feb. 15 at the Coast Inn of the North.

Feb. 14 sessions offer Dr. Gabor Mate speaking on the realm of hungry ghosts at 10:45 a.m. followed by Emma Palmantier, local Aboriginal Task Force chair, at 12 noon.

Tuesday offers a panel discussion at 9 a.m. with Dr. David Bowering, Northern Health chief medical officer, Grand Chief Edward John and Dr. Evan Adams.

Wednesday speakers are Sheldon Kennedy at 9 a.m. followed by Dr. Margo Greenwood of UNBC.

At 2:30 p.m. participants will take a tour of University Hospital of Northern B.C. and the conference will close with a potlatch at 3:30 p.m.

Afternoons are mainly dedicated to break-away separate workshops with women's at the Civic Centre and men's at Coast Inn of the North Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday all workshops are held at Coast Inn of the North.

Registration fee is $150 which includes meals and entertainment. If space permits, registration is free for those 65 years and older.
