This Prince George council candidate is not putting up election signs

Viv Fox is doing things differently

You may have seen Viv Fox at the recent all-candidates forum, but you've probably also noticed the election signs lining the streets are missing her name and picture.

That's because the councillor hopeful has decided to donate to the SPCA instead of spending money on signs that she has no idea what she would do with once the Oct. 20 election is over.

As a pet owner herself with five rescues, helping animals in need and giving to the North District Cariboo SPCA branch is something she's wanted to do.

On Sept. 29, she paid a visit to the branch and donated $500 to sponsor a kennel.

"This is my first time doing this (running in an election)," says Fox. "I don't have a campaign manager, I'm my own finance manager. A lot of people have been asking, 'When are you putting signs up?' or 'When are you going to get signs?'"

Fox says she received a couple of quotes to get signs made, but they were steep for what she would be looking for.

"I got a quote, one for 10 signs and one for 12," she says. "One was $1,400 and then the other was just under $2,000. I'm on a single income and on my own doing this and I thought, 'Holy smokes. What am I going to do?'"

She wondered what she would do with the signs with her picture on them, whether she ends up voted in or not. That's when she decided to use some of the money that would pay for the signs for a local cause in the community.

With her sponsorship of a kennel, the SPCA is able to buy food, pay for supplies, surgeries and other costs associated with the shelter and the animals.
