Recent weather conditions have improved for Prince George and most of northern B.C, reducing the risk of wildfire danger.
Rainfall and cooler temperatures have led to the decision of the B.C. Wildfire Service to lift its Category 2 open burning ban tomorrow (June 7) at Noon for the Prince George Fire Centre.
The ban was initially issued on May 6 and was renewed on May 22.
This means you can use or conduct the following items that involve an open flame in and around the city:
- Use burning barrels and burning cages
- Use air curtain burners
- Use binary exploding targets
- Use sky lanterns
- Use of fireworks, including firecrackers
- Stubble or grass fires over an area smaller than 2,000 square metres
While residents are free to do any of the above activities, they are encouraged to still use caution when burning out in the open or lighting a campfire.
“It is the responsibility of the individual who lights a fire to ensure that burning is done in a safe and responsible manner, in accordance with open burning regulations,” reads the B.C. Wildfire Service. “Before lighting any fire, people should check with local government authorities to see if any local burning restrictions are in place.”
If you plan on burning a pile larger than two metres high by three metres wide, or conduct a grass burn larger than 0.2 hectares (Category 3 fires), must obtain a burn registration number ahead of time by calling 1-888-797-1717.
Anyone who violates an open burning restriction could get a $1,150 ticket, may be required to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail.
More information is available on the B.C. Forest Ministry website.
