Pirate Pete has had a "ruff" start in life.

The pint-sized Chihuahua-cross was flown into the Prince George Humane Society after living as a stray in a very remote northern community.

It's believed Pete got into a brutal fight with another dog. The exchange resulted in a wound called a proptosis, where his right eye was pulled out of its socket.

The infection was very painful, according to Angela McLaren, the society's executive director. She says the non-profit implored the community over social media to send whatever they could afford to pay for a surgery to remove the eye.

"The community's response was outstanding. Literally, within 24 hours, we raised enough money to get it done. It was an overwhelming response. It always reminds us of how the community is just there for us."

Pirate Pete, according to McLaren, has not let his injury affect him.

"Dogs just have this amazing ability to just go on. He's just funny. We always think they're going to be so hard off but they just find a way to work around it. It's like he doesn't even notice what has happened."

She goes on to describe him as a "super outgoing, super loving, super affectionate, loves to cuddle and sit on your lap" kind of dog.

McLaren says that it isn't going to be hard to find a forever home for this four-legged companion.

"He's a pretty awesome dog, so it's not going to be hard to place him. But his perfect family is going to...understand that in the future, they may have to pay for medical issues down the road. He loves attention and affection. He loves children, so I think he deserves that extra care, a little bit of TLC. When we got him in, he kinda just nuzzled in. He knew that we were there to help him."

Interested applicants should head to the Prince George Humane Society. It's located at 1839 First Ave., unit 11. Pirate Pete is currently still snuggling with his foster mom, so a meeting will have to be arranged for those who are seriously considering making this one-eyed wonder a part of their family.
