Thieves net 1,000 litres of gas

The high cost of fuel is making gasoline a valuable commodity. Thieves took advantage of an opportunity to make off with a sizable amount from a rural residence near Francois Lake this past week.

The theft was noticed on Thursday but might have been going on for some time.

"Investigation indicates that approximately 1,000 litres of gasoline had been stolen over a two week period from a bulk tank," said Staff Sgt. Mike Kisters, commander of the Burns Lake RCMP detachment.

"The tank locks had been cut off to gain access to the fuel."

Bulk tanks like this are common on farms and at rural residences where industrial activity is common, like driving trucks or operating heavy equipment. These thefts not only impact the victims' replacement costs, but it could also impair their ability to do the driving required for their business.

Anyone who knows anything about the stealing of fuel from private companies or rural residences is asked to call police as soon as possible.
