A theft of a car while it was left idling has led to 36 days in jail for a Prince George man.

Cheven John Walton Schlitt, 26, was issued the term Tuesday on a count of possessing stolen property under $5,000. He was also sentenced to one year probation.

Schlitt was arrested Jan. 28, a day after the car was stolen from a parking lot of a 3000-block Massey Drive parking lot. The car's owner had been sitting in a friend's car waiting for her own to warm up when she saw a man get out of a nearby pickup truck, get into her vehicle and drive off. It was found the next morning crashed into a ditch.

The sentence also applies to counts of possessing stolen property under $5,000 and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose from a Feb. 12 incident, according to court records, committed 14 days after he was released from custody on a recognizance.

Schlitt had remained in custody since the second arrest.
