Weekend will bring warmer weather for Prince George

Cold blustery conditions expected for Remembrance Day service at city hall cenotaph

Old man winter is getting chased out of town. After several days of cold temperatures and dangerous windchills, weather conditions in Prince George are expected to moderate later this weekend to near-normal levels for this time of year.

If you plan to attend the Remembrance Day ceremony Friday at the city hall cenotaph, dress for winter.

A 15 kilometre-per-hour wind predicted for tonight and Friday morning will produce wind chills in the -22 to -20 C range Friday morning, with Friday’s high temperature only expected to rise to -8 C.

There’s also a 30 per cent chance of flurries Friday afternoon.

The thaw for Prince George predicted by Environment Canada earlier this week is still in store for Prince George but it will take a few days before we start to feel what normal mid-November air should feel like for this region.

Clouds will dominate the sky again Saturday with a high of -8 C and a low of -10 C. Sunday’s forecast calls for a mix of sun and cloud and a high of -7 C and a low of -11 C, then climbing to -4 C on Monday, with a low that day of -8 C.

There’s good news for skiers and snowboarders hoping to take advantage of winter-like conditions, with more snow flurries expected Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. The predicted high on Tuesday is -1 C and it should reach -5 C on Wednesday, with lows both days in the -8 to -9 C range.

Normal temperatures for this time of year are a high of 1 C and a low of -6 C.

Tuesday’s low at Prince George Airport dipped down to -24.7 C, close to the record low of -27.2 C set in 1945. Our high yesterday was only -14.8 C. The Arctic cold front descended upon the city Sunday and we haven’t reached above -10 C since that day. Wednesday’s high reached -11.4 C and the low was -16 C.

The indoor Remembrance Day service starts at 9:15 a.m. at the Prince George Conference and Civic Centre, followed by a parade to the cenotaph which starts at 10:25 a.m.
