Terry Fox tops Citizen 'greatest Canadian' poll

Canada's 150th drew in a close result for The Citizen's recent greatest Canadian online poll. The Citizen asked, "Who is the greatest Canadian of Canada's first 150 years?" Topping the list was Terry Fox at 30 per cent (171 votes).

Canada's 150th drew in a close result for The Citizen's recent greatest Canadian online poll.

The Citizen asked, "Who is the greatest Canadian of Canada's first 150 years?"

Topping the list was Terry Fox at 30 per cent (171 votes).

A close second was Tommy Douglas, the former premier of Saskatchewan, founder of Medicare and first leader of the New Democratic Party, at 25 per cent (146 votes).

Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, came in third at 22 per cent (127 votes).

Frederick Banting, co-discoverer of insulin, followed at 14 per cent (80 votes), singer Shania Twain received four per cent (24 votes), artist Emily Carr was at four per cent (21 votes), author Margaret Atwood at one per cent (seven votes) and lastly, hockey player Hayley Wickenheiser at one per cent (three votes).

There was a total of 579 votes. Of course, this is not a scientific poll.
