A police officer in Terrace has been charged with assault.

Const. Robert Hull faces one count of assault after allegedly hitting a suspect in October during an altercation inside the detachment.

"Hull arrested an intoxicated woman outside a local night club. It's alleged a physical altercation took place in the cell block which consisted of a single punch to the woman," said RCMP provincial spokeswoman Cpl. Annie Linteau.

"The Terrace detachment commander launched an RCMP Internal Code of Conduct Investigation as well as a criminal investigation," she added.

A court appearance is scheduled for March 22 in Terrace Provincial Court.

Insp. Eric Stubbs, who is set to take over as the new commanding officer of the Prince George RCMP detachment commander in the coming months, is the current Terrace detachment commander and has been called in the investigation.

"The incident was investigated by the Terrace RCMP under the supervision of the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP. All investigative findings were forwarded to Crown Counsel who, on Feb. 23, 2011, laid one count of assault against Const. Hull," said Linteau.

Hull has been on administrative duties since both investigations were launched.

There was no official comment on the physical harm the alleged punch caused to the woman.
