Teenage death now a homicide case

The death of a 17-year-old girl in Burns Lake has turned into a homicide investigation following results of an autopsy, said RCMP Sgt. Rob Vermeulen, E. Division Strategic Communication, in a news release Tuesday.

A positive identification of the victim is still underway, and is expected to be completed soon at which time the name of the victim may be released.

RCMP received a call Jan. 26 about an unconscious girl about 3:45 p.m. and upon arrival at a residence on Uncha Mountain Road determined the girl was dead.

"Our investigation is progressing and we believe this to be an isolated incident, not a random act." said Vermeulen. "We are also continuing our support to the family and Cheslatta Carrier Nation through this difficult time."

Resources including forensic specialists, North District Major Crime investigators and members of the Burns Lake RCMP are involved in this priority investigation and police encourage anyone with information to call the Burns Lake RCMP at 250-692-7171 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS
