A 15-year-old youth armed with a shotgun was arrested early Wednesday morning after a police chase that ended on a dead-end street in Quesnel.

The youth, later identified as a young offender, was reportedly driving a white vehicle erratically through the city at about 1 a.m. and failed to stop for Quesnel RCMP officers, who activated their emergency lights and siren in an attempt to convince the youth to pull over. A spike belt was placed near the Quesnel River bridge and the unlicenced driver continued to flee on blown-out tires, passing the Quesnel and District Arts and Recreation Centre before coming to a stop.

Once the arrest was made, police found a shotgun with one spent shell and other ammunition in the vehicle. RCMP later determined the spent shell was fired near downtown Quesnel and that the youth was considering further harm to the public.

RCMP are recommending charges of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and evading police to resist arrest.

The youth is being held in custody.
