Prince George will be the site of one of the first Target stores in Canada, the U.S. retail chain confirmed on Friday.
In January, 2011 Target announced it had acquired the lease rights to 220 Zellers stores, including the location in Pine Centre Mall, with the intention of opening 125 to 135 locations in Canada. On Friday Target confirmed it intends to open a Target location in Pine Centre Mall by spring, 2013.
According to a media report released by the company, it intends to spend $10 million to $11 million renovating each location. Once complete, the new Target store is expected to employ 150 to 200 people.
However, during the six to nine month renovations the current Zellers employees will be laid off, Target spokesperson Sarah Van Nevel told the Citizen last year.
Those employees will be encouraged to apply for positions at the new store, once hiring begins later this year, Van Nevel added.
A spokesperson for Target Canada could not be reached as of press time.
