Suspicious box checks out at Home Depot

Saturday afternoon saw a little more excitement at Home Depot than finding the perfect paint colour when the Prince George RCMP were called to investigate a suspicious package.

Shortly before 4 p.m., a Home Depot employee noticed a black box left in the College Heights' store's parking lot.

After notifying his manager on duty, the police were called to investigate, with explosives specialist Const. Ryan Drohomereski and sniffer dog Astro called around 4:15 p.m.

After sniffing out the large, black, accordion-style box - which was roughly the size of a carry-on suitcase - as well as a few dummy packages the officer put out, Astro did not detect any explosive odour.

"As such, I deemed it safe and opened the box, which was completely empty," Drohomereski said.

Neither the store or the parking lot had to be evacuated.

The officer said the Home Depot staff had done an "awesome" job in securing the area prior to the police's arrival.
