Fleeing suspects attempted to escape RCMP by ramming a police vehicle and running into the woods, but the two were quickly in custody with a larger investigation now underway.
At about 3 p.m. Thursday, Prince George RCMP were alerted to a suspicious pickup driving in the area of Blackwater Road west of the city. A marked police vehicle responded and soon located the pickup.
"The member attempted to pull over the suspect vehicle in the Blackwater Road area," said Prince George RCMP spokesman Cpl. Craig Douglass. "The suspect vehicle did not stop and in fact sped away. A brief pursuit occurred. The RCMP vehicle got ahead of the pickup truck, and the collision ensued when the suspect vehicle rammed the police vehicle."
Almost no damage was done to the police vehicle, but the 1991 two-tone blue Chevy S10 pickup sustained significant front-end damage.
"Two suspects fled the vehicle on foot and were apprehended a very short distance away and are currently in custody," said Douglass. "Other members responded quickly to the area and helped in the brief foot pursuit that went a short distance into some bush."
During the subsequent search of the disabled pickup, police located a number of items including firearms which had been reported stolen in recent days.
The suspects are both local residents and both known to police, said Douglass. No one involved in the incident was injured.
Many passersby noticed the scene unfolding once the collision occurred. Police are interested in speaking with anyone who saw what happened before that. If anyone witnessed any part of the the pursuit as it was underway, RCMP urge a call to Const. Rob Lamont at 250-561-3300.
