A 53-year-old man is facing two charges following the robbery of a woman withdrawing money from a bank machine early Friday morning.

Bennett (Ben) Jardine Galbraith has been charged with one count each of robbery and assault.

Police, who were called to the scene in the 3100 block of Massey Drive at 3:15 a.m., said the robbery was interrupted when another man intervened, suffering a minor hand injury in the process. The woman did not appear to have suffered any injuries.

The suspect took off when police were called and general duty officers located Galbraith a few minutes later on Westwood Drive.

RCMP are reminding people to take extra caution at bank machines, especially early in the morning.

"Whenever possible, attend bank machines with a trusted friend or use drive-thru machines," RCMP said.

"If you find yourself in this situation, the best course of action is not to engage the suspect, as he or she may have a weapon and are likely motivated by drug addiction.

"Money can be replaced. Cooperate and call police as soon as possible."

Galbraith has a criminal record. In March 2013, he was sentenced to one year probation with a suspended sentence for theft $5,000 or under and in January 2014, he was sentenced to one year probation with a suspended sentence for uttering threats.
