A man has been charged in relation to the death of a 39-year-old Fort St. James woman.

Donald James Beynon, 39, faces counts of aggravate assault and breaching a release order, according to court records.

Police said that the woman's partner was arrested after they were called Monday to a home in Fort St. James, 152 kilometres northwest of Prince George.

The woman was found unresponsive and in medical distress and died the next evening, police said.

North District RCMP's major crime unit has taken conduct of the investigation.

Beynon, who has a lengthy criminal record for offences committed in Prince Rupert, Vancouver and Fort St. James, remained in custody as of Thursday.
