Sunshine, above-average winter warmth predicted for P.G.

Spring due to arrive in less than 56 days
Prince George winter activities
Today would be a perfect day to go for a mountain hike. Just be sure to know where you're going and watch for avalanche conditions.

Tired of winter?

Don’t get too down in the dumps, spring is less than 56 days away.

The bright sunshine that greeted us Sunday morning is a sign of more blue skies to come this week.

Environment Canada is predicting above-average warmth and mostly sunny conditions at least until the end of the day Friday.

Today’s high in Prince George is expected to reach 6 C, so get out and enjoy the weather while it lasts. The overnight low is only going to -4 C  and we’ll be heading for highs in the plus single digits for three of the next four days.

According to Environment Canada, we should hit 2 C for the high on Monday and a low of -5 C and another sunny day is expected Tuesday, with a high of 1 C and a low of -6 C. A mix of sun and cloud is in the forecast for Wednesday with a high/low of -1 C/-7 C and on Thursday we should reach 2 C and a low of -10 C. Cloudy skies will return Friday with a predicted high of -1 C an a low of -7 C. Snow is in the forecast  for Saturday.

The average this time of year is -5.2 C for a high and -13.4 C for a low.

January started out on the cold side and six of the first seven days of the month were -20C or colder. On Jan. 5th the mercury only climbed to -24 C and it dipped to -31C, and on the 8th we reached -13 C for a high and hit -29 C for a low. Other than a couple days last week in the low minus-teens, we haven’t had much cold to complain about.

But we have been getting a fair bit of snow, enough to make most of us long for the end of winter.

So far, the city has received at least 35.1 centimetres, which is what accumulated at the airport. But if you live on high ground around the Hart or Cranbrook Hill, there’s probably a lot more than that on the ground. Jan.16 was the snowiest day of the month so far, with 8.7 cm recorded. We also received at least six cm on Wednesday, 4.3 cm on Jan. 12 and 3.1 cm on Jan. 13.

That’s made ski/snowboard conditions pretty much ideal and it’s also a great week to try out the city’s tobogganing hills or head to the outdoor ice oval at Exhibition Park to go for a skate.

Spring officially arrives on Sunday, March 20 at 8:34 a.m.
