It feels like summer this week in Prince George but there’s a price to pay.
Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement and dust advisory to warn Prince George residents of high concentrations of course particulate matter being kicked up into air which could cause breathing problems, especially for people with asthma, COPD, heart disease, and diabetes or respiratory infections such as COVID. Pregnant women, infants, and older adults are more at risk and people with any of the aforementioned medical conditions or infections should avoid strenuous activity.
A city bylaw prohibits all open burning during air quality advisories, as well as recreational fires, use of wood-burning appliances (except for sole wood burning heat users), and street sweeping activities.
Dust levels tend to be higher near busy roads and industrial areas and the advisory is expected to remain in place until there is precipitation, dust mitigation or a change in traffic patterns.
Rain is in the forecast but not until Friday. There is a chance of a thundershower tonight but no significant rain is expected.
Until then, if you can avoid the dusty air, get out and enjoy the weather while it lasts.
