A community group working to save the endangered Nechako White Sturgeon have secured funding to continue their efforts to build awareness, but have not been able to secure financing for an estimated $3.5-million recovery facility.

The Nechako white sturgeon - which live in the Nechako-Stuart rivers system - were placed on Canada's endangered list in 2006. Without recovery assistance, the fish is expected to go extinct.

"The members for the community working group realize that time is running out to save this endangered species," said Brian Frenkel, chairperson of the Nechako White Sturgeon Recovery Initiative's Community Working Group.
