When Kayla Morin learned how to make knit scarves, she soon realized her new skill could be used to raise money for a good cause.
The Grade 6 student from Vanderhoof made and sold 35 scarves and donated part of the proceeds to the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation. The sales netted $350, but the total donation surpassed $600 after members of the Northern Health board of directors also contributed to the cause.
Originally Morin wanted to donate the proceeds to BC Children's Hospital in Vancouver, but after her mother pointed out she could help sick children closer to home by donating the money to the local foundation and having it directed to pediatric care. The money will go towards a wall mounted TV unit in a pediatric room at St. John's Hospital in Vanderhoof.
"The initiative that Kayla has shown with her fundraising campaign is very impressive," Northern Health chairman Charles Jago said in a news release. "Her generousity with her time and talent is an inspirational example of what one person can do to have a positive impact in their community."
