STRIKE PARADE -- On the third day of their legal strike, hundreds of teachers marched up and down 15th Avenue in a show of solidarity to protest pending government legislation written to force a settlement in their six-month old contract dispute. They later planned to gather for an evening rally at the Civic Centre plaza. Teachers are expected to be back on the job Thursday morning or face sanctions imposed by the Labour Relations Board, which limit their strike to three days in the first week. Their return to school means a full day's pay for teachers, who earned $50 in strike pay each day of the strike. Until the province passes Bill 22, the Education Advancement Act, the province's 41,000 public school teachers will be allowed to legally walk off the job one day per week. Classes will be in session today but there won't be school on Friday when teachers are involved in a professional development day.
