A vacant mechanical shop in the BCR Industrial Site was the latest site of a copper theft.

The building in the 1000 block of Great Street was unlawfully entered sometime in the past three weeks.

Thieves stripped the building of its copper wire, even extracting it from within the walls. According to police, the building is slated for demolition so the damage was incidental, but the loss of the scrap metal was a loss to the rightful owner.

"Police are advising shop owners to check their respective businesses on a frequent basis, and to be aware that copper wire can be a lucrative draw to some criminals," said Prince George RCMP spokesman Gary Godwin. "If other valuables are stored with it, they may also be stolen, or noted by the culprits who may then just return in the future, and break in again."

If you have any information about this incident or other copper thefts lately please contact the Prince George RCMP at 250-561-3300 or anonymously contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or go on line at www.pgcrimestoppers.bc.ca.
