Still time to comment on ICBC proposal

ICBC's open house on proposed changes to the way it sets basic insurance premiums has come and gone, but there is still a chance to make your opinions known on the issue.

ICBC's open house on proposed changes to the way it sets basic insurance premiums has come and gone, but there is still a chance to make your opinions known on the issue.

The insurer is accepting comment until June 22 on a shift to a driver-based system where premiums are based on the number of at-fault collisions a motorist commits.

An open house Tuesday evening in Prince George drew a steady flow of people, said ICBC personal products director David Clancy.

"What we were doing was showing people a range of options for how we think we could make our pricing fairer than it is today," Clancy said. "They had an opportunity to give us feedback on each of the options and we got a broad range of opinions."

A meeting earlier in the day with insurance offices, RCMP, tow truck companies and repair shops was held to get feedback from industry stakeholders.

"What we were mostly focussed on were lower-risk driver and higher-risk drivers and how should we appropriately divide the premiums people pay between the two groups of customers," Clancy.
