Steering school supplies to those in need

The wheels on the bus go 'round and 'round on the Kiwanis Yellow School Bus at The Pine Centre Mall. This bus will be loaded with school supplies for students who may find themselves in need, said Sandra Raymont, marketing manager.

Once the bus is filled its next stop is the Salvation Army where supplies are delivered to students.

"We hope that students can concentrate on learning and not worry about having the proper tools to attend class," said Raymont. "We also encourage all our shoppers to generously assist by dropping extra school supplies in the Little School Bus right in front of the Zellers' entrance in the mall."

Because the bus is small and people may want to donate big, larger items can be donated at the Customer Service desk at the mall.

The program is in partnership with the Kiwanis Club, Pine Centre Mall and the Salvation Army.

School supplies needed include backpacks, binders, small calculators, geometry sets, blunt and pointed scissors, highlighters, pencil crayons, pencil cases, glue sticks, loose leaf lined paper,

blue, black and red pens, erasers, rulers, crayons, markers, dividers, duotangs, graph paper, coil notebooks, lined three-hole exercise books and portfolios.

As a result of the Yellow School Bus program in 2010, 240 children received school supplies they needed to begin their school year. The Salvation Army anticipates there will be a greater need this year to assist families to help educate children. The Salvation Army is experiencing a 20 per cent increase in new families requesting help and services who have never before come to a community food bank. The Salvation Army is grateful to individuals, organizations and corporations who donate so that those who are most vulnerable can get the assistance they need.

Those in need of school supplies are invited to attend the Salvation Army at 777 Ospika Boulevard Sept. 8 at 9 a.m. and are asked to bring identification for themselves and their children, along with a school list of supplies.

"We will do our best to meet everyone's needs," said Barbara Croome, community ministries coordinator at the Salvation Army.

The Yellow School Bus at the mall will be at the Zeller's mall entrance until mid-September. People can donate at the Salvation Army, the Prince George Citizen, and TD Canada Trust locations, as well as the mall with school supplies or monetary donations designated for school supplies.
