Staking a spot

Campground reservations open tomorrow

In the wee hours of Sunday morning, Prince George residents turned their clocks one hour ahead to conserve daylight later in the day.

People can now start planning how to fill those illuminated evenings in the open air.

Beginning tomorrow at 7 a.m., outdoor enthusiasts can make reservations at provincial campgrounds for the season.

Last year, camping reservations in parks were up 40 per cent over 2010 and 48 per cent for the last week of August. Parking fees were also eliminated at all of B.C.'s provincial parks in May 2011.

Campsite reservations are accepted a maximum of three months in advance while group campsite and group picnic areas can be reserved up to 12 months in advance. Reservations for Bowron Lake have been open since Jan. 2 to accommodate international travellers.

New this year to the online Discover Camping reservation system (www.discovercamping.ca) is the ability to make up to three bookings at one time. A non-refundable reservation service fee of $6 applies to each booking - whether they're made simultaneously or not.

The website offers information on the availability and amenities at more than 125 reservable campgrounds in 78 provincial parks across B.C. The system also offers mobile Web services, so mobile users can easily make or change reservations. For a $5 surcharge, reservations can also be made through the call centre at 1-800-689-9025.
