St. Michael's and All Angels' Anglican Church is beginning a year of celebrations to commemorate 100 years in Prince George.
It was 1911 when two congregations, borne of mission efforts, in South Fort George and Central Fort George amalgamated to become a new church which is the present day St. Michael's at Fifth Avenue and Victoria Street.
Festivities officially begin with the Feast of St. Michael on Sept. 26 and continue until culminating a year later Sept. 23 to Sept. 25, 2011 when Bishop Barbara Andrews plans to preside at a special worship service.
Throughout the year there will be ongoing events ranging from displays of historical data showing the church's growth to the present, which will be highlighted with picture directory, celebratory quilt banner and a number of social events.
A strong focus will be on the church's community commitment through projects like the lunch bag program, soup bus effort and Sunday street church.
Future planning under interim rector, Joe Ponic, will see St. Mike's making changes to its worship to better relate to the younger generation who are the future leaders of the church.
On Sept. 12 a new Sunday School program at 10 a.m. will focus on helping children experience God in their lives while the Sept. 12 service will bring progressive changes in liturgy, and updated language and music designed to attract a wider community demographic, said Ponic.
All Prince George residents are invited to join in the Centennial celebrations and share in the spirit of God. Call the church at 250-564-4511 for more information.
