St. John Ambulance is offering free opioid overdose response training to the general public in Prince George next month.

The free training is available to anyone who is likely to encounter an overdose.

It is also geared toward not-for-profit organizations that have completed the Naloxone risk assessment, which helps organizations determine whether their staff should carry Naloxone in the event of an overdose.

Naloxone is a drug that can temporarily reverse the effects of an overdose within three to five minutes. It's available without a prescription to anyone in British Columbia for emergency use to reverse opioid overdose, and regulatory changes have made it possible for anyone to administer Naloxone in any formulation with the appropriate training.

The opioid overdose management training is a 3.5-hour, in-person course.

Each participant will perform at least six simulated injections using the same equipment available through the “Take Home Nalxone” kits. The course will offer various scenarios to ensure each participant is comfortable.

While this course is geared toward any level of first aid experience, it does require participants to be at least 16 years of age.

The training is on Sunday, Oct. 21 from 1 to 4:30 p.m., and on Monday, Oct. 22 from 8:30 a.m. to noon, and then again from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

To register, call St. John Ambulance at 250-561-1696 or email [email protected].
