The 35th annual Spruce Kings Home Show Lottery is building up to a big finish as tickets sales come to a close on May 1.
Since the first home was built in 1981 at a cost of $80,000, today's prize home is valued at $554,810.
This year's home will offer the lucky winner 3,260 square feet of open-concept space, four bedrooms, three bathrooms, Cambrian quartz counter tops, vaulted ceilings, a spacious deck and classic flooring throughout.
The lottery has benefitted hundreds of contractors and businesses over the years and millions of dollars continue to go back into the community.
It remains the single largest fundraiser for the community-owned junior hockey team, which continues to run as a non-profit society.
The lottery accounts for about 65 per cent of all hockey operation costs.
"I don't think people realize how much cost is involved in running the team," said Lu Verticchio, business and marketing manager for the Spruce Kings.
The total budget is over $1.5 million annually.
Team hockey sticks add up to $35,000, equipment costs total $36,000 and meals account for $35,000.
This event provides many opportunities to our players but it also gives the team the opportunity to give back to the community," said Verticchio.
"We provide a pillar, an example and place to come in the community," added Spruce Kings president Tom Bohmer.
"We represent the community as a whole and that means a lot to us."
The Spruce Kings continue to help out when they can from offering kids reading programs, partnering with the Society of
St. Vincent De Paul and offering community members access to all of their games.
"This is all about the community, not just the team and this gives the team the opportunity to show their pride as a team," Bohmer said.
