Saturday night's Prince George Spruce Kings home game, a 5-2 loss to the Chilliwack Chiefs, doubled as a successful fundraiser for the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation and St. John's Hospital in Vanderhoof.

The Kings, who skate in the B.C. Hockey League, teamed up with Spirit of the North and the Vanderhoof and Districts Co-operative Association to generate money for surgical instruments at the hospital. The goal was to raise $3,200 and the target was reached.

"Thanks to the kindness and goodwill of the Vanderhoof Co-op, the Spruce Kings and the fans, we are delighted to say that the equipment has been funded in full," said Annette Stevens, donor relations manager for the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation.

The instruments are for ear, nose and throat procedures at St. John's. Their addition is expected to cut surgical wait times in half - from 18 months down to nine months.

The Treasure Cove Casino donated an initial $1,000 to the cause and Freflyt Industries added $200. At the game, many fans purchased Spirit Bears to help reach the financial goal and the Kings chipped in the proceeds of their 50/50 draw.

"Thank you to everyone who came out to support this great cause," said Allan Bieganski, general manager of the Vanderhoof and Districts Co-operative Association.

Added Lu Verticchio, business and marketing manager for the Spruce Kings: "It was great to see such a huge crowd out supporting this. Thanks to Vanderhoof Co-op, Treasure Cove Casino, Freflyt Industries and the fans - this benefits the entire region."

Announced attendance at the game, played at Rolling Mix Concrete Arena, was 1,969.
