The annual Spay-Ghetti and No Balls Dinner and silent auction will be held at North 54 on Sunday, Oct. 26 in support of the local SPCA.

Funds will go towards supplementing the budget for veterinary care for animals that come into the shelter.

It all started in 2011 when Dr. Valerie Giles was elected to the Community Council for the local shelter.

"At one of the first meetings, I was faced with reports about animals who were euthanized because of medical problems, which rendered them unadoptable," said Giles. "Had any one of those dear creatures had a home, any feeling person would have taken him or her to the vet. It was for lack of enough money in the budget for veterinary treatment that they were killed."

She cried during the meeting, she admitted.

"It occurred to me that tears would not help the animals," said Giles. "Breaking down crying was not exactly my finest hour. But, it did inspire me to act. After all, we get behind causes to make a difference."

Dinner at North 54 includes a three course meal, including a Caesar salad, a choice between a meat tomato Ragu with no balls or the vegetable-based version, Alfredo Primavera. Dessert is a warm spiced pumpkin cake served with a buttermilk cream cheese icing.

Several items are up for grabs during the silent auction including, travel, home decor items, electronics, art pieces, services and treats for pets and humans.

This event starts at 6 p.m. on Oct. 26. Tickets are $50 per person and are available at North 54, upstairs at the Northern Hardware office, and at the SPCA.
