The missing dog that led searchers to a dead person in Prince George has now been found.
Jonita Hayer and a friend were doing a foot search after sightings of the missing family pet Sophie, a Yorkshire terrier. On Wednesday afternoon that foot search took them to a sparsely wooded meadow at the base of Cranbrook Hill, a couple of dozen metres west of Foothills Boulevard. While searching for signs of Sophie they instead came across human remains in the snow.
"This was a fictional storyline adventure," said Jonita and husband Robin in a written message to friends and family. "We know we will be telling everyone this crazy tale for weeks to come."
Sophie had been missing for five days before turning up on Thursday evening. It provided closure to one chapter of the storyline, while police provided final answers earlier on Thursday about the human victim.
The human remains belonged to a 29-year-old Prince George man who, said Mounties, died of non-suspicious causes. Details as to his identity and the cause of death were not disclosed, at the request of the man's family.
The Hayers said at the time that they felt better about the loss of Sophie knowing that their search had brought answers to a grieving family. Now, they too have been given some good news from the unusual set of circumstances.
