The Association Advocating for Women and Children is $8,400 richer thanks to the Black and White Soiree.
Soiree organizers Shannon Horrigan and Jacki Collyer presented a cheque this week to AWAC executive director Diane Nakamura for $7,414.41, while Prince George Canadian Tire owner Selen Alpay donated $1,000 on the night of the event.
Horrigan said AWAC was chosen this year because of the help it provides women who've landed in tough circumstances. Among other things, it runs a shelter on George Street.
"We thought, well, let's check it out and we saw facility and we wanted to work with them," Horrigan said.
Nakamura said the money will go directly to AWAC's supported housing program, "Cindy's Haven," named after Cynthia Maas, one of the victims of serial murderer Cody Legebokoff.
The program, which currently has six participants, had been running without funding since 2012, Nakamura said.
In past years, the soiree has typically raised about $5,000. It was originally held just as a night out for women but evolved into a fundraiser to go along with the dinner, stiletto contest and fashion show.
