Society against liquor store at Coast Inn

An attempt to establish a liquor store at the Coast Inn of the North is meeting with controversy.

An attempt to establish a liquor store at the Coast Inn of the North is meeting with controversy.

The Nezul Be Hunuyeh Child and Family Services Society, whose office at the corner of Ninth and Brunswick is directly across from the Coast Inn, has written a letter to city council opposing the idea.

"We work with families with addiction issues and the opening of the liquor retail will enable easier access while attending services at our agency; this is not a positive step in their recovery process," the society's finance and officer manager, Crystal Hicks said in the letter.

Council will consider Monday night whether to grant the Coast Inn a three-year temporary commercial use permit to run a liquor store in the old Sergeant O'Flaherty's location.

Coast Inn general manager Doug Andrews said in a letter to the city that several steps will be taken to limit disorderly and nuisance behaviour, including installing additional lighting and repainting the surrounding entrance to brighten the area, increasing security and removing alcoves from the entrance area. Sale of items that promote chronic alcoholism will also be restricted, he added.
