The snowmobiler who died in an avalanche and was recovered yesterday near Prince George has been identified as 40-year-old Dallas Mayert.

The long time Prince George resident was well known as a stock car racer and snowmobiling competitor.

Mayert was caught in an avalanche in the Torpy Mountain Recreation area northeast of Prince George on Sunday afternoon.

He was struck approximately 30 to 40 kilometres from where he and a friend off-loaded their snowmobiles, according to Prince George RCMP.

The second snowmobiler was able to avoid the avalanche.

Due to concerns with the distance, the weather, daylight and the snow pack in the area, search and rescue personnel were unable to recover Mayert's body until Monday.
