Snowmobiler missing following avalanche

A snowmobiler remains unaccounted for after an avalanche struck Sunday in the Torpy Mountain Recreation area, northeast of Prince George.

A snowmobiler remains unaccounted for after an avalanche struck Sunday in the Torpy Mountain Recreation area, northeast of Prince George.

One other rider was able to avoid the avalanche 30-40 kilometres from where they off loaded their snowmobiles, Prince George RCMP said.

Due to concerns with the distance, the weather, daylight and the snow pack in the area, search and rescue personnel were unable to begin the search on Sunday.

An avalanche expert was to fly over the scene at first light this morning to determine if the area is safe.

"There is a possibility, that explosives may have to be used to loosen unstable snow before the search can begin," Prince George RCMP said in a press release.

"It has been reported that this area had over six feet of snow, three feet of which fell in the previous 24 hours before the avalanche."

Names of the snowmobilers have not been released.
