Search and Rescue crews have recovered the body of a missing 40-year-old snowmobiler.

The B.C. Coroners' Service is investigating.

The individual was caught in an avalanche in the Torpy Mountain Recreation area northeast of Prince George.

The snowmobiler was struck approximately 30-40 kilometres from where they off-loaded their snowmobiles, according to Prince George RCMP.

A second snowmobiler was able to avoid the avalanche.

Due to concerns with the distance, the weather, daylight and the snow pack in the area, search and rescue personnel were unable to begin the search on Sunday.

Avalanche technicians flew over the area Monday morning and deemed the area around the site too dangerous for search and rescue personnel to enter on foot. Technicians worked to make the area safe for crews to get in and begin the search.

"There is a possibility, that explosives may have to be used to loosen unstable snow before the search can begin," Prince George RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Craig Douglass said in an early press release. "It has been reported that this area had over six feet of snow, three feet of which fell in the previous 24 hours before the avalanche."
