A heavy snowfall warning has been expanded to include communities along Highway 16 west of Prince George.

An intense low-pressure system was expected to move into the central coast of B.C. Friday evening and cross the northern interior Friday night, leaving heavy snow in its wake, an Environment Canada statement said. Environment Canada had previously issued a snowfall advisory for the Pine Pass.

Mixed rain and snow was expected to turn into heavy snowfall in Terrace and Kitimat, with more snow also expected in the Bulkley Valley, Lakes district and Pine Pass.

"The heaviest snow is expected this evening before tapering to flurries overnight," the Environment Canada warning said. "Total snowfall amounts are forecat to be near 15 to 20 cm closer to the coast and 10 to 15 cm inland."

In the Peace region, 10 cm of snow was expected by early Saturday morning.

Environment Canada urged drivers to be careful on the roads, because visibility may be low do to heavy snow.
