Another project to better protect local forests from future wildfires is taking place near Prince George over the next several months.
The BC Wildfire Service is set to begin a new fuel management project tomorrow (Dec. 16) west of the city towards Vanderhoof as part of the provincial service’s ongoing plan to remove ladder fuels and ground debris that could spark large blazes.
This is the third pile-burning project being done within the Prince George Fire Centre in the last three months.
The latest initiative is known as the Redmond Pit Road Wildfire Risk Reduction Project.
Crews will be conducting controlled pile burns that will cover roughly 30 hectares of land west of Redmond Pit Road and south of Quail Road, located six kilometres west of Vanderhoof.
As a result, smoke and flames may be visible to the public, but the BCWS explains such practices will limit any impact on air quality in local communities.
Personnel from the Prince George Fire Centre will be on scene to monitor the burn piles.
Weather dependent, the project is expected to be complete by April 2, 2021.
More information on open burning and smoke control can be found on the BCWS website.
