B.C. police are investigating after smelling salts were found in a child’s Halloween candy.

Police were called to Arm Street in Esquimalt about 6:30 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 1) after the item was located. The family had gone trick-or-treating in the 900-block Arm Street and on 700-block Selkirk Avenue the night before.

Officers are asking anyone else who trick-or-treated in the same areas to check their children’s candy. If anything suspicious is discovered, call Victoria police at 240-995-7654, extension 1.

Police have canvassed the area involved but have not found anything.

Port Alberni RCMP had to deal with reports of medication being found in Halloween candy in 2018, but it turned out to be a mixup involving a woman in her 80s who appeared to have cognitive issues and was handing out items including calculators and clocks.

The medication was found in egg-shaped Kinder Surprise containers.

Police arranged for her to receive hospital treatment.

In 2017, children in Victoria received cannabis gummies. They were in a package that had a cannabis leaf on it and said: “Keep away from children and pets.”

Police said at the time that the person giving out treats at the home “appeared to not be aware of safe Halloween practices and may not have been aware of what had been handed out.”

They were instructed not to hand out any more candy.
