A repeat offender was sentenced to one year in jail Monday for possession for the purpose of trafficking for an incident that began when a Mountie came across a man asleep in a running vehicle.

Harjinder John Singh Berar, 44, was found in the vehicle in the 200 block of Cherry Avenue at about 8 a.m. on July 30.

The Mountie, a general duty officer at the Prince George RCMP, found Berar hard to wake up and appeared to be affected by a drug, according to a police report issued at the time.

A significant amount of cash and cocaine was found in the vehicle and methamphetamine was found on Berar's person and he was arrested.

Based on Berar's criminal history, police obtained a search warrant for his home in the 1100 block of Chilako Avenue where they seized a quantity of cocaine, drug trafficking materials and a stolen

television.

As a result, Berar was charged with two counts of drug trafficking, two counts of drug possession, and one count of possession of property obtained by crime. All but one of those charges were

eventually stayed.

In October 2010, Berar was sentenced to 56 days in jail for possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking in connection with an August 2010 raid on a "problem drug house" in the 1100 block of Chilako Avenue.

And Berar has previously been convicted of unlawful confinement for which he received an 18-month jail term offset by one year credit for time served prior to sentencing for a March 2008 incident.
