A chance-encounter by a heads-up Prince George RCMP officer has led to house arrest for a man who was caught loading marijuana into his vehicle.

Shayn Barry Friesen was sentenced to a six-months term for possession for the purpose of trafficking in Prince George Provincial Court on Tuesday.

The conviction was for a Sept. 29, 2010 incident where an officer on routine patrol noticed Friesen loading boxes into his vehicle at a location in the 5100 block of Hartway Drive during the late night.

Police seized 10 pounds of marijuana worth $15,000.

Prior to sentencing, the court heard that Friesen was unemployed at the time and had been offered $500 to transport the boxes to a location. Friesen has no prior criminal record, the court was also told.

A conditional sentence means Friesen, who now lives in Grande Prairie, Alta., can continue to live at home and to work but is subject to a curfew and, like those who receive a jail sentence, is required to abstain from alcohol for the duration.

Friesen was also issued a 10-year firearms prohibition and ordered to pay a $100 victim surcharge.
