Six people safely fled from a house fire Saturday morning in the 2600 block of Abbott Crescent in Prince George.

Prince George Fire Rescue said 16 firefighters from three halls responded to the fire shortly after 10:30 a.m.

When crews arrived, they found two adults and four young children waiting outside who were assessed for smoke inhalation and taken to the University Hospital of Northern B.C.

Firefighters found heavy smoke throughout the single family house and determined there was a fire in a basement bedroom.

Crews were on the scene for just more than an hour clearing smoke.

PGFR said while damage to the main floor of the home was limited to smoke, the basement sustained significant fire and smoke damage.

A preliminary investigation suggests the cause of the fire was accidental.
