An AK47 was the weapon fired into a sleeping residential neighbourhood on Tuesday night.
The city's 911 line lit up with people who heard or saw the incident at 11:23 p.m. near the intersection of 5th Avenue and Tabor Boulevard.
Police were on the scene almost immediately. They were told that "a lone gunman opened fire on the driver's side of a dark coloured pickup which immediately fled the scene northbound on Tabor Boulevard," said Prince George RCMP spokesman Cpl. Dave Tyreman at the time.
The Citizen learned subsequently that the vehicle in question was a black Ford F150. Police believe the driver of the pickup was the intended victim and was definitely targeted. Ties to organized crime are believed highly likely, but the reasons for this were not disclosed.
"We are now contacting individuals well known to us who are also known to drive a black F150," said RCMP spokeswoman Const. Lesley Smith. "We are following up a number of leads we have."
The main lead was the gun they found, and not just any gun. The AK47 assault rifle and its cousins are the weapon of choice for the Russian army, most former Soviet states, the Chinese military, and most terrorist groups. It is widely considered the best gun in its class, and a highly effective killing machine.
