The B.C. government will fund 30 extreme weather shelter spaces in Prince George this winter to help those whose health and safety may be threatened by cold, wet weather.

The ASAP Bridget Moran Shelter, the AWAC Women's Shelter and the Prince George Native Friendship Society's Ketso Yoh Men's Shelter have each been alloted 10 spaces extra spaces.

The spaces will be available from now until March 31 as communities issue extreme weather alerts for their area.

"With winter bringing harsher and more unpredictable weather, it's important to have emergency shelter space where people can take refuge," Prince George-Mackenzie MLA Mike Morris said. "Having extreme weather shelters available in our community can save lives."

Each community decides what weather conditions warrant an alert and how many spaces to activate on a given night, depending on the capacity of existing shelters and the estimated need.
