Shaw cable, internet restored after fire

Shaw cable and internet services were restored just in time for the Vancouver Canucks playoff game on Sunday.

Shaw cable and internet services were restored just in time for the Vancouver Canucks playoff game on Sunday.

An early-morning fire at Clancy's Restaurant and gas station in Lac La Hache disrupted Shaw's cable and internet service to Williams Lake, Quesnel and Prince George. Services were down from approximately 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Shaw vice-president of operations Chris Kucharski said.

"It was quite difficult. Our crews couldn't do anything until the fire was contained by emergency crews," Kucharski said. "I have to give our crews credit... [the playoff game] was in the back of their minds as they were working on this."

The fire broke out in the early morning hours and the restaurant/gas station was fully engulfed by flames by 5:45 a.m., according to neighbouring business operators. Fire fighters were still on scene as of 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

Calls to the Lac La Hache Volunteer Fire Department were unanswered as of press time.

The outage was doing more than an inconvenience for the Prince George RCMP, who rely on the service to access police data on their computers, spokesman Cpl. Craig Douglass said.
