Sharing the ice

Skating at the Prince George outdoor oval is unsupervised, so there are a few rules in place to ensure the rink - which is the size of about four hockey rinks - is shared safely for all. Last year, there were about 7,500 visitors to the oval.

Skating at the Prince George outdoor oval is unsupervised, so there are a few rules in place to ensure the rink - which is the size of about four hockey rinks - is shared safely for all. Last year, there were about 7,500 visitors to the oval.

During recreational skating, all ages, skill levels and skates are allowed, but no speed or crouched-position skating.

During the open skating times, recreational users should use caution as skating at speed in the crouched position is allowed.

There is no smoking allowed within the oval or within 30 metres of the entrance gate, nor is there alcohol allowed on site.

Although it was permitted in years past, there are no hockey sticks, pucks or nets allowed on the site.

All skaters are to circle the rink in a counterclockwise direction, with slower skaters in the middle and faster skaters in the outer lane. Stopping, sleds and strollers are allowed in the inner-most lane only.

Helmets are recommended and children under the age of 12 should be accompanied by an adult.

If a hole is accidentally created in the ice, let a volunteer know so that repairs can be made. Skaters have to vacate the ice during any maintenance work, which may be required at any time during the day. A five-minute notice is issued before any maintenance begins.
