Severe thunderstorm watch for Prince George

Take precautions, Environment Canada advises, as storms can mean hail and damaging winds

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Prince George and area.

The weather agency reported Wednesday, June 18 that atmospheric conditions become favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rain.

Residents are urged to take precautions, as thunderstorms may also bring damaging winds and hail.

Weather observations from the Prince George International Airport at 11 a.m. showed mainly sunny skies with a temperature of 16.8C, a dewpoint of 11.3C, and humidity at 70 per cent. Winds were light out of the west at eight kilometres per hour, with visibility at 16 kilometres.

Despite the morning calm, forecasts indicate a 60 per cent chance of showers or thunderstorms throughout the day and into the evening.

The expected high today was 18C, with overnight lows near 5°C.

Light showers are expected to linger through Thursday and Friday, with a 30 per cent chance of rain both days and daytime highs of 19C and 22C, respectively. Nighttime temperatures will dip to single digits, hovering around 6C to 8C.

For Saturday, a pattern of mixed sun and cloud is expected to settle in through early next week. Daytime highs will remain comfortably in the low to mid-20s, peaking at 24C over the weekend. Nights will be milder, with temperatures ranging from 7C to 10C under partly cloudy skies.
