A photography exhibit will be on display at the Prince George Public Library on Wednesday to shine a brighter light on the community perspectives of young women.
Inspire Action will showcase pictures taken by 24 young women between the ages of 14 and 26 at the main branch of the library on Wednesday, beginning at 10 a.m. This exhibit is presented by the Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society as part of a broader project called Setting The Stage.
"This is the second phase of the Setting the Stage project," said Tonianne Mynen, project coordinator.
The young women went out and took photos of their surroundings and then came together to talk about them, making a statement and expressing a view point about the community, Mynen said.
The first phase of Setting the Stage was to form a steering committee that would invite community partners into the multi-year project. There are eight community partner organizations to guide and advise the group of young women, Mynen said.
"We also created a young women's advisory committee and membership is still open so if there's young women who are interested, they are more than welcome to join the committee," said Mynen. "The young women really drive the project and they have the say in what we do and the actions that we take on."
In phase three the young women will pick projects on how to address the barriers they identified and how to make a change and then make the projects come to life, Mynen said.
"We really want to have the girls messages heard that they have expressed through their photography and we really want the community get an awareness of what the young women are facing and then start a conversation and inspire action and ideas about these projects," said Mynen. "It's very much girl driven but to really effect change the whole community needs to be a part of it."
The exhibit will remain in the Keith Gordon room of the library until August 29.
